[ubuntu-za] ERROR REPORT: NO SPACE LEFT ON DEVICE - 8.04.1

Hi Vincent

The lock file in the archives directory is supposed to be there. It
prevents multiple programs from installing things simultaneously. You
can also clean the apt cache with sudo apt-get clean or sudo aptitude
clean . This will remove the .deb files for you. sudo du-sh /* will show
you the size of the directories and you should be able to figure out
from there what's taking up the space.

Reading your first post - ls -l /etc/ppp/chap-secrets shows "-rw-rw----
1 root root 136 2008-12-18 23:05 /etc/ppp/chap-secrets" on my box. You
need to use sudo/gksudo/kdesudo (depending on how you connect to be able
to get online. ifconfig should also show ppp0 as an active device when
you are connected. If it does not show up when you are using dialup
something is wrong. When 8.04 first arrived there was a problem with
Firefox not being able to connect when using dialup. I'm not sure it has
been fixed but the problem seems to be in /etc/hosts. If you can ping
google when you are connected but not use Firefox then add 127.0.0.1
localhost on a separate line in /etc/hosts. Networkmanager gives endless
problems with dialup on 8.04 and I suggest you don't use it. By default
Networkmanager tries to route internet through eth0 even if you use
dialup. Another way around this is to setup eth0 with a static IP
address. Let us know if you make progress.

Hannes

Hi Hannes,
Thanks for the above info & advice.

I've cleaned up the apt cache, this has cleared up +/- 4.2MB.

Doing a du -sh as you suggested, shows that the main culprits are:
media-3.3GB
usr-2.19GB
var-2.8GB.

I would imagine that usr should be left alone, looking at the files,
they all appear to be working files.

This leaves media with +/- 3.1GB taken up by old backup files on disks 1
to 3. 8.04 has created a further disks 4 to 11 which are locked &
unreadable, but if I add disks 1 to 3 together, it only leaves about
200Mb for these locked files. Is my arithmetic correct here?

Can I safely remove these old backup files, & if so, How?

Var has a backup file with 2.4Gb of files, leaving the rest of var with
the balance of 400MB.

Can some of these backup files be removed & again, if so, how?
I know that there's the option in sbackup to purge old files, but I
don't think hardy can use this funtion until space has been made.

With regards the dial out problem, I had 100% connection, no problems,
using wvdial.Firefox, TB, kontact all worked perfectly.

I don't know if it's coincidental, but since installing 8.04 again on
another partition, this problem has appeared - Although I never tried to
go on the 'net before the second install...I just put it down to the
fact that the disk was full & hardy couldn't write to it.

How do I go about taking the second install out if this is the problem?

In fact, I probably need to remove it anyway, there's no need to have
two of the same thing, is there?

I've checked the /etc/hosts file & the line 127.0.0.1 is in there, I
seem to recall when first setting up the dial-up modem, that I had to
put that line in to get Firefox working.

Please explain ping google? - I've never had to use this before.

I've already downloaded your triangular calender - This, if put on
slightly thicker backing, will be a great giveaway to customers, in
their face, on their desk....sorry, just the salesman in me coming out!

Thanks once again for all your help.
Best Regards
Vincent
