Once again, I'm going to have to differ with the advice given, especially
when the inteded audience is new to Linux...

Rather just use "sudo" on all the commands that need root access - it's
safer. Were you to use "sudo su" and then forget that you're still root and
run some dangerous command, you'd be in a lot of trouble. Using "sudo"
requires you to consciously invoke root access, and lessons the possibility
of making a fatal mistake.
