Turn usb off in the BIOS

Try all the kernel params at boot:
noapic nolapic noacpi irqpoll=off nomsi apm=off

If it boots, you know it is one of those.

I had a desktop recently which only boots with lilo. Even
the gutsy beta CD couldn't boot it. Do you perhaps have sata
drives using the achi driver?
