Curiouser and curiouser. "mysql -u root" just gives "Command not found"
indicating that mysql is not actually installed. What is installed is
mysql-common and some libraries.

I just froze the versions and am carrying on ...

One of the dependencies is ubuntu-desktop. Who is he?
