That is a windows installation. If I created an fstab entry wouldn't
that mean that I would have to have the camera attached whenever I boot
up, to prevent getting an error code (code 22 I think)?

Sorry to harp on the root login aspect, but surely a lack of an fstab
entry would affect all users if it was indeed a factor?

Perhaps I should add that I made an entry for the device details
in /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libgphoto2.rules.

I have noticed that Edgy requires a lot more adjustments to permissions
than were required in Dapper. The present problem never arose in Dapper
where I just plugged in the camera and downloaded the pictures without
any trouble.
