I was shocked to navigate to a South African school website
   http://www.bryanston.com
and be told that "This website requires certain FREE software", namely
Internet Explorer 5 (plus, I guess, Flash). I felt as though I had been
transported back to the bad old days of the Browser Wars, although
happily that would mean I could warn everyone about the dotcom
bubble.... :-)

The company behind this travesty is http://morphogine.com/, which has a
program for "donating" a website to a school.

OK, the price is pretty good; but it does look to me like it offers no
more functionality than a regular open source CMS
(http://opensourcecms.com/).

Is anyone on the list in a similar business, but based on open
software? I suppose I don't mind the proprietary nature of the
platform, but sniffing for IE5 is just unforgiveable.

Robert.

PS - Admittedly, the site does not run on Firefox even when I fake my
UserAgent string.
