Synaptic installs software. There is also the Ubuntu device manager
which doesn't do anything really, just reports on hardware, iirc, and
the ubuntu hardware database where you can report on your hardware back
to ubuntu developers.

The scanner module should load automatically. Just run Applications -
Graphics - Xsane. If this does not work, and it is a usb scanner, post
the output of lsusb when it is plugged in and powered on.

Try google Ubuntu+ScannerModelNameAndNumber
