I updated bug 17431 as follows, and am now building xorg-server-core
from source so I can try to hack together a fix myself.
(I've successfully avoided ever building ubuntu packages
from source until now; this is the first thing that ever forced
me to!)

I'm getting this with an nvidia card now, too, so it's generic, not video-card
specific.

The "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode" says
(EE) NV(0): No valid initial configuration found

Foo. Now I have to go buy monitors for all my build slaves. This can't be
optimal.
