Hi Bryce,
 Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I tried today's updates
(with the updated xorg stuff) as well and perhaps one step closer that
now I get the login screen but can't enter any data i.e. the keyboard
dies. Although the mouse works.

clicking on the shutdown box shows the outline of the dialog box and
the two arrows signifying cancel and yes but no data (i.e. no dialog)
