Short version: Hi, I'm Jon, I'm mostly here to listen.

Jon,
Welcome! :-)

Longer:
I'm in the throes of writing my PhD thesis in astronomy (which limits
my free time a titch.) I starting using Linux with Slack 3.4 in
February of 1998 and pretty quickly switched over to it as my primary
OS. Switched to Debian when hamm was released and stayed there for
nine years--actually the same installation across several hard drives
and motherboards, compiled from source all the way. (This was annoying
around 2002 when Gnome had some cycles in the dependency graph.) I
regained sanity in 2007 and gave Ubuntu a spin with Feisty.

Currently I'm dipping my toe in bug triage and helping stem the tide
over at Answers. (Also picking at the Debian RC bug list and dabbling
in learning autotools and DocBook.) More significant involvement in
the project will probably have to wait till graduation.

As far as specific list topic: yeah, there's a problem with sexism in
FLOSS, and I figure staying "plugged in" will keep me aware of both
issues and solutions while going about my regular participation.

I hope that by listening you will be able to help us in getting more people (especially women) involved in the Ubuntu Project and Community. Again, Welcome!!
