I have a bit of a dilemma that I'd like advice on... (a variation of
this was also posted on my personal blog www.emmajane.net)
I occasionally give tech support in #ubuntu. This weekend someone logged
into the channel with the nickname "stupidgirl."

Hi Emma,
I think you handled the matter as diplomatically as was possible given that the person using the nick "stupidgirl" was indeed a girl. I think that by explaining to individuals who use female derogatory nicks that doing so is hurtful and counterproductive to the other female ubuntu community members. Then point them to the ubuntu-women website.

As for the ops channel response, not wanting to ban the nick I think is valid, characterizing you as "emotional" is uncalled for. You had every right to make the inquiry without being labeled. How do you shake the label? I'm not sure, but time will tell.
