The most important thing is that you want to make sure you don't run
anything that you don't need, and for the things that you need, always
make sure you have the most recent version (or the most recent bugfix,
if there are multiple supported versions).

Also, you might want to read security lists during the competition
(sometimes easy workarounds exist for exploits).
