Good evening,
As a follow-up to this week's meeting I'd like to get (additional)
feedback on the Road Map (pasted at the end of this email for your
convenience). I think this is an important document to help get focused
efforts to increasing the number of women in the Ubuntu community. I am
sure we will all have different things that we want to contribute to
this effort. Please help to refine the goals that are there, and add
your own; but please be very careful in removing any goals. These are
long term and may take years to accomplish, but it is important to know
at what point our group will become obsolete.
To accomplish the goals set out in this Road Map we will need a list of
"next actions" that need to be taken for each of the goals. Working from
the notes of the meeting that Leigh took I've updated the ToDo page on
the Wiki. These are essentially the "short term goals" or "tasks" or
whatever language your Productivity Guru uses. :)
There are also TWO DATE-SENSITIVE topics:
(1) The deadline for the Ubuntu Live conference is FEBRUARY 4th. If you
have even the smallest desire in attending the conference in Portland,
USA *PLEASE* consider submitting a proposal to speak. If you are
interested in speaking, but need help with a topic and your proposal
please feel free to bug me on IRC, or here or by private email--I'm
*sure* there are others who can help out with this as well. My own
personal crusade in life is to get more women presenting at conferences.
More information about the conference is available from:
http://en.oreilly.com/ubuntu2008/public/content/home
Ideally I would also like to build on the talk that was given last year
on Ubuntu Women with a panel discussion with group members...
(2) Thanks to Cathy Malmrose for submitting an article on such short
notice to the UW column in the Full Circle Magazine. Seeing as it turned
out to be such a hot bed of controversy last time I thought it might be
a good idea to start thinking about the next one NOW! :)
Additional notes from the meeting are available on the Wiki:

regards,
emma
PS As per usual. My apologies for the length of the email. If I'd had
more time, this email would have been shorter. :)
RoadMap [ copied from http://wiki.ubuntu-women.org/RoadMap ]
This page details a "Road Map" for the Ubuntu Women Project - our goals,
plans and ideas for the future. This is a draft document and will be
discussed at the next Ubuntu Women IRC meeting on February 13, 2008.
1. Community Participation
1.1 Role Models
1.1.1 UW members will participate in core Ubuntu projects to increase
the visibility of women. Ubuntu Women will act as strong role models to
all community members and will act as mentors to women wherever possible.
Goal at least three visibly active women in all core Ubuntu projects.
1.1.2 Ubuntu Women will work with Ubuntu governing bodies to identify
suitable candidates for all leadership roles.
Goal 50% women on all governing bodies.
1.2 Communication
1.2.1 Provide multiple areas for participation within the UW community
across IRC, the mailing list and the forums.
Goal create a network which fosters redundancy of information across
each of the communication channels to acknowledge preferences in how
individuals communicate and participate.
1.2.2 Ubuntu Women will continue to monitor all forums and promote
participation especially by female participants.
Goal double the current volume of contributions by female participants
in the forums.
1.2.3 UW will especially continue to monitor the Ubuntu Women Forums
with the goal of connecting with these women and helping them to become
part of the core Ubuntu community.
Goal convert all female participants in the UWF to participation in at
least one core Ubuntu project.
1.3 LoCo teams
1.3.1 UW will encourage women to attend team events, work with the LoCo
team, and get involved in the greater Ubuntu community.
Goal Establish the current level of participation in these events by
members of Ubuntu Women.
1.3.2 UW members will work with LoCo teams to identify and implement
ways to increase female participation.
Goal find a UW member to mentor each of the LoCo teams.
2. Advocacy and The Encouragement Toolkit
Create marketing materials that can be used to promote Ubuntu and
community participation. These materials will be referred to as "The
Encouragement Toolkit." Whenever possible this material will be taken
from the efforts of other groups. This is not meant to be a duplication
of efforts. In addition to end-user marketing material, this kit will
include information to presenters on how to (1) find an audience and (2)
deliver the presentation. Target organizations may include:
not-for-profits, charities and women in IT organizations. Materials will
include:
* brochures
* presentation slides
* information on how to order Ubuntu CDs
