I've found it helpful to start with a non-gender specific alias, and use
only that, until you know the majority of the people really well, or it
otherwise becomes necessary to reveal your name.

I did this, until people were talking about sponsoring me to go to UDS,
in paris, which would obviously require my real name as listed on my
passport.

Seemed to work fine.  No need for a male pseudonym - a random one will do.
