I think the move from Pay for Mandriva -> Ubuntu was a common one. 

I guess I wasn't as surprised at Ubuntu's ease of use, Linspire, Knoppix and
Xandros were all taking a similar route as Ubuntu (user friendly built on
Debian) - but of course with less success. I was however impressed with how
quickly they did it, just two years and it's taken off and become something
even the founders didn't anticipate :)

That's excellent!

I remember the first time I plugged my digital camera into Ubuntu and it
automatically detected my camera brought up the already installed camera
software - not even Windows will do that! Windows needed drivers and software
installed.

The Ubuntu community really is a great one (no doubt that is a huge reason for
its success).
