How are you testing it - headphones, internal speakers, external speakers...? Whatever you are trying, try something else as well. If trying headphones, check that they work with a known good source. If you have external speakers, make sure they have power (or new batteries). If USB powered, power them from a known good USB power source (eg a charger). Whatever software you are using to play your sound, turn on visualisation. If your software doesn't have visualisation, try playing your sound through Totem instead, and turn on the visualisation in that.
