I thought that this should work.
To upgrade to the latest MATE Desktop 1.14.x in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 using
the
official Xenial MATE PPA, open a terminal and use the following commands:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/xenial-mate
sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade

I would have expected that to work, assuming that you had installed
Ubuntu Mate rather than just Ubuntu.

What would you suggest to do if you want ubuntu-gnome and mate on top of it
to have a choice when logging in. I have no problem to re-install. Pensioner

On top of what? Once again please try to make it clear exactly what
it is you are saying.

Sorry English not being my mother tongue makes difficult to
express correct meanings.

So I did as suggested "Installing mate-desktop-environment" and
now after logging out I was given a choice.

Good day and thanks to all taking time to respond to some not so
good explanations from me.
