When gnome was re-written it became a lousy bloody awful mess to
use on
<br>
my desktop and simply didn't work, period, on my netbook, which
I am
<br>
using right now. The MATE version of Mint is just perfect on
both.
<br>
<br>
Now that there is a desktop version of Ubuntu with MATE I might
give
<br>
that a whirl when I have some spare time. Perhaps install it
under
<br>
Virtualbox and give it full USB access for starters, see what
happens.

I'm not the OP but here is what I don't like about ubuntu. The
window buttons are on the left and I am used to them being on the
right. We used to be able to move them to the right but now we
can't. The menus are either in the menubar (top panel) or the
windows title bar. Both of them are bad choices as far as I am
concerned.
<br>
<br>
If they are in the menubar and I am working at the bottom of the
scree I must mouse up to the top to use a menu. If they are in
the window's title bar I must be sure I give a rapid click of the
mouse or the menu does not drop down.
<br>
<br>
I have only had 16.04 on my laptop for a short time and have not
had a lot of time to check it out, but both of those short comings
seem to be present in 16.04.
<br>
<br>
I also have Mint with both Cinnamon & Mate install. I think I
prefer Cinnamon, but I have to research how well they handle dual
monitors before I would consider switching.
