I think that this is saying something: if even XP now has the same
hassle with FF 18.01 then this requires some thinking about....
Can you do me a favour?
Let me preface this by saying that if you look at my signature line you
will see that I do not use *buntu of any kind but do use KDE. I point
this out because I am going to ask you to do something which is based on
what *I* see in KDE but I have no idea (I have forgotten how to after
giiving Ubuntu away a couple of years or so ago) where to find the
setting I am going to mention. But even so it shouldn't be impossible to
find even in Unity or gnome...
While I have Firefox 18.0.1 installed I do not use it but use version
21.0a1 which is a Nightly (it's built and released every night). I would
like to try using this Nightly and see if there is any difference.
Installing it is dead easy. Here are the steps:
* go here
<a moz-do-not-send="true" href="http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-central/">http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-central/</a>
and download the appropriate *.tar.bz2 file for your system (32- or
64-bit) of Firefox 21.0a1;
* create some folder - lets call it TEST - and move (or copy, as you
wish) this *tar.bz2 into it;
* unpack this *tar.bz2 file and it will unpack itself into a sub-folder
within TEST callled 'firefox';
* BACKUP your '/.mozilla' directory in your /home - the FF 12.0a1 will
use this /.mozilla folder for all its info (bookmarks, security
settings, etc);
* MOVE (or copy, as you wish) the 'firefox' folder which was created
when you unpacked the downloaded *tar.bz2 file into your '/home/<Rocky>';
* (here's the bit I was talking about above where you will need to find
the setting): go to the applications Menu settings which contain the
parameter(s) that start Firefox when you click on the Quicklaunch
widget. The menu item will contain 'firefox %u' as the application launcher;
* change this 'firefox %u' to now read-
/home/<Rocky - or whatever you use as your user name>/firefox/firefox
and save this change.
When you now start Firefox it will start this Nightly and the first
thing it will do is to check if the Add-ons you have are compatible with
it. (If some are not then let me know because there is an Add-on which
overcomes this incompatibility.) Iti will also ask you if you want to
make Firefox your default browser.
See if this Nightly misbehaves re your book Chapters.
Now, if you want to get back to using the 18.0.1 version of Firefox
simply go back to that Menu settings and change back to 'firefox %u'
from '~/<Rocky....>/firefox/firefox'. (Or, if you want the ability to
switch from one to the other create a new launcher widget so that you
have one for FF 21.0a1 and another for FF 18.0.1. When you switch, FF
will go thru the Add-on compatibility check once again.)
And there is no need to delete the 21.0a1 firefox in your home directory
- unless you want to.
BTW, if you keep using 21.0a1 2 things will happen:
* if you have set it to auto update itself then it will update itself
daily (occasionally there are several days without an update because the
build process goes wrong so don't worry); and
* your Firefox 18.0.1 may get updated via the normal Ubuntu update
process but don't worry it won't affect 21.0a1. (And, of course, any
daily update of 21.0a1 will not affect 18.0.1.)
