OTOH, why do you think it is a problem of the router? I'd rather suppose
it is a problem of the wireless adapter of your Ubuntu machine. What
wireless card do you have in that machine? With a card that uses the
ath9k driver I have the same problem like the TL-WR1043N with openwrt
firmware (yes, that firmware uses the ath9k driver as well). But I don't
have a problem with the Intel ipw2200bg or an Atheros card which uses
the ath5k driver.
I would agree that it much more likely that it is a problem with the wireless adapter in your Ubuntu, especially since your Wife's XP computer is working fine with the wireless router. There are a lot of USB Wireless N adapters available now but in my work, I have found great variation even in those in terms of receiver sensitivity (ability to connect and keep the connection to the wireless router). And also beware of orientation of the wireless antenna(s) are important and should be realatively in the same plane (parallel) to the antenna on the wireless router.
