Thanks. I did aptitude full-upgrade, which resulted in a lot of activity.
Then I did startx
which apparently "worked" (no error messages) but did'nt give me anything
else
than a shell, apparently (with smaller script!)

Then I restyarted the pc, and now the kernel 2-6-32-12 did' ny even drop me
into a shell!

Restarting again, kernel 2-6-32-12-recovery mode works, I run dpkg, which
did use some time and did
something, but I can still not start as before.

?Any other suggestions, apart from startin g from scratch??
I am on 10.4 now but it lacks stability. I find after about
10 minutes it drops back to the login page. But it is Alfa so
this is good for a starter.

I will now try for some updates...need all we can get!
This comes to you from Thunderbird on Ubuntu 10.4 Alfa. It
seems to be doing well now but still a few rough edges. Expected.
I have figured out that when something fails on this Alfa
version, a panel comes up wanting to send a message to Ubuntu.
You let it and in a few minutes Firefox comes up showing that
your problem is listed as a bug in the Lucid area. There are
lots of bugs but hope they help the workers make the final
10.4 a real keeper like 8.4.

Also the dropping to the login window is I think a feature.
I'm going to see if I can find away to turn off this feature.
I am on Kubuntu (kde), but problem is similar, new usplash uses new
theme that is apparently not installed. Further to Tom's suggestion, if
you have a blinking cursor, do a "Alt + F1", or is it 'Alt + F2', F7?
(never quite remember, please remind me), you will then be sent to a
login prompt command. Login in and then type 'startx', or 'sudo gdm
start' (for me, that's kdm start). You will be be able to boot in with
old splash theme.

If you know the theme is called 'ethais', (it is usually different for
gnome and kde), let me know, I'll send you a link where you can download
the theme, otherwise you'll have to startx each time to boot.
Of course, I think the theme will be later added on, as they had
forgotten to so. After all this is alpha2, we can expect some errors.

Yes. Using different profiles to troubleshoot problems is always a good
idea. My point in giving you the link was your "BE WARNED" statement...
<http://support.mozilla.com/img/wiki_up/6e2d77cd857fa24e876097c4af69a4a9-1260152566-432-1.png>
See the little 'Don't ask at startup' box? Unchceck it when you are
using a test profile, that way you'll get the option to select the
profile when you restart firefox. You can check it again when you are
finished testing.
