My guess then, if the lockups are cross platform and everything else
checks out, that the motherboard is dying, or the CPU is dying. though
usually, a CPU death will be throwing off other symptoms such as drastic
system slowdowns, particularly when multitasking or doing something
intensive.

I helped repair one of these a couple of weeks ago. The CPU fan wasn't doing its job. We cleaned the unit (dust bunnies looked like dust apes) and replaced the CPU fan and it hasn't happened again.
