May be a grub2 issue. I had a similar, not exactly, issue yesterday on 9.1. The fixit menu came up but I couldn't scroll thru it without the screen corrupting with messages that normally appear on the konsole screen preceeded or followed by the keyboard locking up. The only out was to reboot. After many reboots, I was able to scroll thru the fixit menu only once, selected fsck, the screen blinked quickly going to the VT then screen corruption again. Never could get anything to run satisfactorily or find xfix. I'm wondering if xfix has been removed from the recovery mode fixit menu. Yes, Karmic is still beta and the annoying kernel failure and kwin failure messages are only getting worse. Perhaps the devs will fix it eventually.
Re: your root prompt issue, did you type exit in the console?
That or "cntrl D" from the keyboard.
