<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>The rezone for this is that once I had a bad
experience with a similar setup. I had a faked hardware raid controller with 3
disks (raid 5) that worked fine on Windows. I tried to convert it to Linux and
failed to create a software raid. Linux (Ubuntu 8.04 server, Ubuntu 8.04
desktop, RHEL) recognized all the disks, but the creation of the raid failed.
Only after a lot of time I tried to install free NAS and it told me that one of
the disks was defective. After replacing the defective disk the software raid
worked like magic.</FONT></DIV>

07/28/2009 11:36 PM:<BR>> dear all,<BR>> <BR>> i have this SATA
controller on my motherboard (lspci below), and i have<BR>> two identical
drives attached to it. in the Marvell option ROM in the<BR>> system
BIOS, i have successfully setup a RAID-1 configuration, and i am<BR>> told
that the array is "healthy" and/or "functional" upon bootup.<BR>> <BR>>
initially, after booting into ubuntu 8.10 with linux
2.6.27-14-generic,<BR>> the controller and thus the drives were not
properly detected.<BR>> <BR>> i then found a bug report[1] (you will see
my puny plea for help there<BR>> as well), which directed me to [2].
after following the instructions<BR>> there, ubuntu was detecting the two
disks i had attached to the 6121 as<BR>> separate disks, and not as one
logical RAID-1 volume as i would assume.<BR>><BR>> 1. <A

have come across this[1] wiki page, and realized i should use softraid<BR>with
my setup. i never realized these built-in controllers were
"fake"<BR>RAIDs. sketchy manufacturers... ;-)<BR><BR>so, i searched
around, and followed the instructions at [2], up to<BR>creating the first
array. now i have /dev/md0.<BR><BR>then, i jumped over to [3], since i
want it to be encrypted, and started<BR>with step 1b, filling the device with
random data. that is still<BR>running, and will take about 4 days by my
calculations to complete.<BR>then i will continue with that guide.<BR><BR>in
the meantime, if anyone has any tips, etc. i would appreciate
it!<BR><BR>thanks<BR><BR><BR>1. <A
