I mounted an Ubuntu ISO image onto a CD as instructed. I installed Ubuntu in a VM on MAC. I was not asked for a username or password. I suspect you booted a Live CD in a VM. Just start the VM again with the Live CD in your drive (preferrably mount an ISO image). When its up, select Install Ubuntu.
