It sounds like a compiz issue. Are you by any chance using an nVidia
card and have Extra visual effects enabled?

Try this: bring up update manager & when the white square appears just
enter your password. If it goes on to the update manager properly, then
it is a compiz issue. Note: I can reproduce on my system if I do not have:

Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"

set in my screen section in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file with visual
effects set to Extra. What is happening is that update manager isn't
crashing, the problem is that the password manager popup window isn't
being properly decorated (meaning you just get a white square).

Go to System|Preferences|Appearance|Visual Effects| - click 'None' &
Close. Now bring up the update manager again. Does it still give you the
white square, or does it show that actual password manager prompt. Note:
there is a 15 minute timer set on the password manager, so you may have
to wait 16 minutes before trying the test again.

Open a terminal & post the output from the following command:

$ lspci |grep VGA
Thank you very much for your advice; it appears to have done the job! (I didn't have to use the CLI, by the way, just the GUI.)

--N.B.
