It sounds like you want debian stable. KDE 3.5.10 and a whole bunch of rock solid software. I just installed the Gnome desktop, and at a quick glance it is better than the KDE as fas as just basically working. For instance, my power manager and google desktop icons have not disappeared under Gnome. I run Kmail under Gnome just fine. I think I'll stay with the Gnome desktop for a while. I read in the Ubuntu forums that 8.10 worked quite well on the Inspiron laptops, so I went for it. I should not have gone with KDE 3, I think that was the big mistake.
