Your right thorny, that is just the case, i've already sent a new mail before this one with some extras...<br><br>I do not have a device.map i've forgotten to say, plus i've made my own and at beast it just makes the pc reboot after grub...<br>

There is a chance that your issue is caused by your device nodes being<br>
enumerated differently when you boot with a mix of SATA and IDE.<br>
<br>
Sometimes that can be corrected by using a LABEL or UUID designation in<br>
the GRUB menu.lst file for the boot drive. Have a look at your GRUB<br>
device.map file to see if that information gives any hint. Maybe look at<br>
fdisk -l and blkid too after booting the system. Sorry, I can't give you a<br>
definitive answer, just a few more questions to consider.<br>

From what you describe it looks to me like your system doesn't<br>
find GRUB at boot when you have that mix of SATA and IDE.<br>
