Can you post the connection setup? Example, for the two machines I have
active now:

bg (hardy 192.168.2.100)<===>
router (192.168.2.1 - is the gateway)
<==> bg-laptop (intrepid 192.168.2.102

I can ping both ways (IP and by name)

On bg I have in my /etc/hosts
192.168.2.1 gg-laptop
On bg-laptop I have in my /etc/hosts
192.168.2.100 gg

$ cat /etc/resolv.conf on bg shows my routers actual outbound internet
IP dns servers for my IP, but changing them to the router gateway
(192.168.2.1) works.

$ cat /etc/resolv.conf on bg-laptop is 192.168.2.1 (nameserver 192.168.2.1)

[Note: some IP's/names have been changed to protect the innocent :-)]

I can do the same w/some complication by adding in a wireless router
connected to 192.168.0.1, setting bg-laptop to wireless etc., etc., That
involves some added configuration on both routers but works just fine.

I need to take a break from this for tonight. There is something really odd about this. I was able to get on a windows box on the network and was able to ping media just fine.

Thanks for you time. I'll get back on this tomorrow when I'm fresh if you're still willing to help.

Bob
