I have a similar problem, and I'm sure that it's my Nvidia driver that interferes somehow. If I disable the Nvidia driver, then it works, but I like the Nvidia driver. Some people have been able to get it to work by reinstalling fast-user-switch applet, but I haven't had this luck trying that.
Hi list,

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 on my desktop computer and on my laptop. On
the desktop computer the "Switch User" feature works like a charm, but
on the laptop (Thinkpad X60s with Intel graphics chip) I always get
stuck on a black screen with just the mouse curser after suspending
the session of user A in order to log in as user B.

I already searched launchpad for a bug report matching my problem
without finding anything useful and I have no idea where to start
tracking down the source of the problem. I would appreciate any hints
(e.g. which log files should I examine?) or even some assistance in
finding out where the problem comes from and how to fix it.

Cheers
