My problem that my USB flash drive was not mounted has sorted itself out, perhaps after I corrected a typo in /etc/fstab---miscellaneous garbage of a couple of lines. Instead of the name of the VFAT flashdrive showing up on "Places" as KINGSTON, and mounted as /media/KINGSTON, now the following is seen in places: "USB Drive", and when it is clicked, the drive is not opened or mounted. I have to unplug and plug, study the output of "dmesg" and mount it manually. What I fear is that running with that line in /etc/fstab might have caused some config file to be updated, leaving the functionality of automounting for the system in an unusable state.
