Brother reqauires you to use the --force option in order to install their printer drivers on Linux/Ubuntu. They have the best Linux/Ubuntu support and I don't think they would tell you to do something that would break anything. Their drivers wont install on a 64 bit Linux system because they a 32 bit and require to install their plugin wrapper also. I'm not talking about installing a pure Debian deb file on a Ubuntu system, not that I think anything is inherently wrong with that, but am talking about installing a 32 bit driver to get it to work on a 64 bit system. So the option can't be all that bad when it is absolutely required to make my printer work on Hardy 64 bit. FWIW, no intended slur and my APT is working just fine and up-to-date.
Hi,
"In earlier times" (TM) there was a
True :) I'm just being very cautious when talking about mixing Debian
packages with Ubuntu on the list. I think the best option in such cases
is always to recompile locally.
Somehow the first and the second part of your sentence don't fit
together. If they had "the best" linux support, their drivers would
simply be in the distro's repos
Strictly speaking it is meaningless to talk about "the --force option",
that's why I originally wrote "--force-things". dpkg has many
--force-<thing> options, some of them more dangerous and some of them
less so.

I have no idea about 32 vs 64 bit as I never ran a 64 bit system, so
far. But it still sounds like a badly-created package.
I'm not sure, but I think there is a difference between the VirtualBox
licensing models. IIRC the open source version of VBox does not support
USB. Could this cause the problem?
Which VirtualBox version do you use? The GPL version coming with Ubuntu
doesn't have USB support, you need the PUEL version instead. You can
download it from www.virtualbox.org. And you need the usbfs entry
in /etc/fstab which looks like this:

none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=1002,devmode=664 0 0

Replace the 1002 with the group ID for vboxusers on your machine. You
could use this command in a terminal to make the entry if you don't want
to look up the vboxusers GID:

echo "none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=$(grep '^vboxusers' /etc/group|
cut -d: -f3),devmode=664 0 0"|sudo tee -a /etc/fstab

Then enter the command

sudo mount -a

and restart VirtualBox. Before you assign the USB device to the guest you
should umount it at the host because the host can no longer see it.

I have one of those (Hauppauge WinTV HVR 900) and it works fine in hardy
