When you do the update, it updates every installed package in accordance to the new distribution schema. This means that if some of the packages installed need to be removed, it will ask you if you want to do so (if they have been deprecated and replaced by some different mechanism). It will directly update every package that has a more recent version in the new distro, and it will ADD any package required by the new distro that may not be already present in the current one. </blockquote> This was my experience.
