sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core
sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg

sudo apt-get install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop

Reboot. Boot to recovery mode and select option 4 to xfix, when
finished, select option 1 to continue to normal boot. Hopefully that
will get you back to a gdm.
