Samba is a pain, but it does work. This can cause problems. Moreover check if the window machine has other network shares mounted, in that case it will send the same username and password to the samba server, and if it is not right it will not allow you to access the share. >From the linux box, if you cannot smbclient the clients, try to add their ips to /etc/samba/lmhost and try to do a nmblookup against the client name.
