There's quite a big difference between default KDE and Kubuntu Bruce. Kubuntu has lots of alterations, extras, and omissions. Perhaps starting with a server install then installing KDE on top of it would suite your needs? I'm not sure what's installed by default on Ubuntu server though... just minimal I would think. If you know enough to know the difference between Kubuntu and default KDE I'll assume you'll be fairly comfortable at the CLI so installing a DE from a server install would be no problem. This might be heresy, but actually, if you are that comfortable another distro might suite your needs. There are lots of distros that use clean KDE.
