That just screams bad memory to me. You should first and foremost boot from a CD (The Ubuntu install CD will do) and choose the Memory Test option. If you're computer is spitting out errors in this test, that needs to be repaired above all else.) The second problem is the Out of memory error messages. This could happen if one misbehaving program went nuts and used up all available memory in your system. (and all the OOM killing would explain why your system went nuts.). However, it can also mean that you don't have enough SWAP space and are running out of memory from regular load.
