Thanks to those who responded.  It looks like Unison, like rsync, requires that software be running on both ends.  This will work great for my music server, but not for the network drive, which is not a computer and can't load and run programs.  If anything comes to any of you as a solution for this while you're daydreaming in the shower or something, let me know.
