1). I would not recomend Automatix, it can set you up to have problems with upgrades in the future. 2). Mplayer error is almost certainly this :<a href="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mplayer/+bug/65165">https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mplayer/+bug/65165 </a> you can fix it by going to prefrences and switching it to X11 or something similar. 3). I generally install all of the plugin packs for gstreamer (ugly,bad, good, and the multiverse variants of each), and have 0 problems playing much of anything.
