Ubuntu does not come with a firewall by default. You can check your LAN connection by going to terminal and typing ifconfig. Your connection may be labeled as eth0 or eth1, typically the first connection is assigned as eth0. If you do not see that in there, it's possible the drivers were not loaded for your particular network card/chipset
