If you start an app using root privelages, for example Synaptic or something then another SCIM icon will appear for the root account. The apps automatically spawn a new SCIM process but they don't kill it, so you will end up with two SCIM keyboards. The workarond is to use scim_xim input method... unfortunately on my en_GB-UTF8 system this doesn't work.
