I'm guessing I had a badly corrupted Maildir (with thousands of files in it) and this caused part of the lockup/reboot issue when rsync ran as a cron job and tried to collect files from that directory. I know it was rsync as since I've turned off that cron job the machine hasn't locked up. The next step is to copy the Maildir directory back from the server and see if that causes a problem. If not then I'll re-enable the cron job and see what happens then. To me, it looks like the system can't find or head something in the disk. If it really was a hardware failure, another message about the device being "resetted" should've appear. It doesn't seem to be the case. I would suggest to backup everything and reformat it.
