I as well have had the same issue. But got over it by defaulting back
to my SBpci512. Oh woe is me.

I'm now having a different problem. Sort of.
Very odd. I have, by necessity, two sound cards. One is
built into the laptop and I can't do a damned thing about it.
It's terrible, though, so I have the external SB so I can stand the
sound coming from my system.

Now sometimes programs will randomly... use the built-in card, not the
SB. The SB is selected as the default sound device, but for some
reasons apps will suddenly switch over to the other card. System
sounds still go to the SB, but Totem, say, goes to the laptop
speakers. Very weird.

Is there any way to tell ALSA to pretend one card doesn't exist?
I mean at boot it says "setting up ALSA card 0" and "setting up ALSA
card 1". Can I tell it to ignore card 0?
