Before I upgraded to 5.10 I know I had my terminal window 40%
transparent. Can we not do this with windows now?

Still works for me on a system upgraded to 5.10.
In the terminal window menus, Edit->Current Profile to change the
characteristics of the current profile (transparency set on the Effects
tab), File->New Profile to create a profile. Terminal->Change Profile
to switch between existing profiles.
