Hello, I cannot speak to your specific problem because I have not run proftp. Instead I would point you at vsftp. vsftp is a light weight ftp server available via synaptic/apt-get. I was able to find a lot of sample config files on the web and had very little trouble setting it up. Good luck which ever direction you go!
