I don't understand.  You are having trouble with a Ubuntu 25.10 or
26.04 machine.  What does logging into a Ubuntu 22.04 machine have to
do with the problem?

But in any case, if you can login to the problem machine (Ubuntu 25.10
or 26.04?) using a virtual terminal, then you should be able to view
the logs for the login manager or the desktop manager.
