Some of my systems on boot check if a file system check (fsck)
has been done in the last ??6 months??.  The fsck and multiple
file systems can take quite a while.

You say you can get to a virtual console (<Ctrl><Alt><F2>).
Log into the vcon and run something like this:

   # ps -ef | grep -i fsck

to see if a fsck is running.
