Odd behavior after xscreensaver unlock in 24.04.1 latest

It has no way I can see for activation other than the screen timeout.
Xscreensaver can be locked on demand, which I need.
On the bright side, I reactivated xscreensaver (and deactivated the
xfce4-screensaver) and the weird issue did not recur. This morning
when I unlocked the screen, everything was fine. I've liked
xscreensaver for years - it shows the slide show I set up and I enjoy
the available controls and responses - when they work properly, which
they seem to be doing now.
Solved? Or just worked around...
