I found this to be a constant source of problems for VirtualBox -- VB
would not build on updated kernels. I had to wait weeks for Oracle to
release an update. In the meantime, the VB service would fail to start
and break the video subsystem.
For a while I was installing two kernels: linux-image-generic and
linux-image-generic-hwe-22.04. I would switch between them as VB
broke. Then one day both were broke.
You might consider changing to KVM+QEMU+libvirt. Once I switched I no
longer had the problems. That's because the kernel folks also maintain
the VM gear.
