Did you see my previous post? -
What do these commands show?
ls -l /etc/default/grub
and
ls -l /boot/grub/grub.cfg

As for removing the kernel I don't know what Grub would do when you
boot and the kernel it apparently wants is not there.  You could end
up with a non-booting system.  Personally I would not try that if I
have not got physical access to the system.
